This gentle, family-friendly hike follows the A.T. northbound for about 2.5 miles as it threads under I-81 between highway 220 in Daleville and Route 11 in Troutville. This narrow strip of public land features a surprising variety of habitats, from forest to field to streambank, plus some nice views of Tinker Mountain.
We'll see how many flavors we can find in the woods, from tart sourwood to sweet blackberries and minty birch stems. Hike leader Kathryn Herndon-Powell is bringing plant and animal field guides so we can look up any interesting birds, mushrooms, flowers, trees and animals that we encounter.
This hike is being offered as part of Troutville Trail Days, so participants will meet up at the RATC tent at Troutville Town Park. Depending how many folks come, we'll spot some vehicles at the Route 11 trailhead then drive around to Daleville.
Please bring water, snacks, sun protection (hat and/or sunscreen), a rain coat or poncho, hiking shoes and any other essentials you typically bring on a day hike. The hike leaders will have first aid kits and maps.
Enhance your Troutville Trail Days experience with a one mile round-trip hike to a Botetourt hidden gem: Humbert's Hill on the A.T. We'll gather at the ATC/RATC tent in the Troutville Town Park, then shuttle just a mile down the road to the Route 11 A.T. trailhead parking. A half mile north on the A.T. brings you to a hilltop meadow with great views of Tinker Ridge. It's uphill, but a gentle climb by A.T. standards. Your guide, Suzanne, can name all the mountains you'll see from the top (along with many of the plants and critters along the way).
Kids and well-behaved dogs on leashes welcome!
